Orthodontic treatment works through moving teeth gradually to a new and improved position. Traditional straightening treatment relies on braces which use brackets and wires to guide teeth to a new position. Other straightening systems can use clear aligners that move teeth without the need for wires.
Why have your smile straightened?
On top of the obvious cosmetic benefit of a neat and straight smile, straightening can improve your overall oral health. Crooked and overlapping teeth create areas that are difficult to keep clean through regular brushing and interdental cleaning. Moving these teeth back in line frees up these spaces and makes it much easier to keep your mouth free from gum disease.
Moving your teeth into a proper alignment can reduce the chance of jaw problems developing and improves the bite across all your teeth. A good alignment prevents toothwear caused when bite surfaces don’t mesh together correctly.
Teeth straightening at Slateford Dental Care
We offer Invisalign at our practice. We’re able to address minor alignment problems in your smile, focusing on the social six front teeth. Our straightening treatments can neaten up crooked teeth and close up gaps in a smile.
What does the treatment involve?
We first arrange for a dental check-up so we can take a good look at the health of your teeth and gums. The treatment is much more effective if your oral health is in top shape.
We need to take impressions of your teeth and mouth shape. These moulds are used to gather accurate measurements for the lab to create bespoke braces or aligners. Once your appliance is ready, we arrange for the fitting.
For braces, we need to see you throughout your treatment so we can monitor the progress, making sure your treatment is constantly at work.
When your teeth reach their destination, we catch up and arrange to take impressions for your retainer. It’s an exciting time to see your new straight smile.
Keeping your smile straight
We want to do all we can to keep it straight, so after your treatment, we take impressions for your retainer which will keep your teeth from moving out of position. Retainers are clear, removable moulds of your teeth that are worn at night. They prevent your teeth from shifting and give them a chance to stabilise properly.
As teeth are prone to natural movements as we age, your retainer can keep your teeth straight throughout life if worn regularly.
