Why are hygiene appointments important?
Much of the plaque that builds up on teeth surfaces can be cleaned away with routine tooth-brushing, but some can be hard to reach and might get missed. A hygienist can use special tools to remove plaque and tartar deposits from all surfaces, keeping your gums clear of bacteria.
Gum disease is linked to health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and alzheimer’s disease. Preventing it can help your overall health as well as avoid any gum recession and tooth loss.
What is gum disease?
Bacteria causes gum tissues to become inflamed as the body’s immune system reacts to its presence. Plaque and tartar deposits consist of bacteria so when near the gum line, they cause the gums to flare up. Mild gum disease is perfectly reversible through trips to the hygienist and regular brushing and interdental cleaning at home.
If left untreated, mild gum disease progresses to periodontitis. This condition is a lot more aggressive as it leads to the gum tissues receding, creating pockets between the tooth and gum. At this stage, periodontal treatment can manage the condition, but it’s a life-time condition.
