Tooth Whitening

Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a simple, safe and effective procedure to improve the appearance of your teeth and give you a brighter smile in just a few weeks, and is now one of the most popular dental cosmetic treatments. Teeth darken naturally with age, but can also discolour with foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine and juices, and smoking. Certain long-term antibiotics such as tetracycline can also cause the teeth to darken.

At Slateford Dental Care, after an initial free whitening consultation appointment to check your mouth is healthy and that you are suitable, we can professionally whiten your teeth using either Philips Zoom Power Whitening, or Enlighten Whitening. Both methods are similar, combining whitening at home using carbamide peroxide gel and specially made whitening trays and an in-surgery whitening procedure.

Tooth whitening is available for patients of 18 years and over, and we follow the current guidelines set out by the General Dental Council. It is currently illegal for anyone other than a dentist or dental hygienist/therapist to carry out tooth whitening, and your dentist is the only place you can legally be prescribed safe and effective tooth whitening gel.

There are many over-the-counter whitening products, but most home kits sold in the UK do not have enough concentration of gel to be effective. Some kits sold may also have mild acids and abrasives which may damage the enamel. The products we use are proven to be harmless to the enamel, and will not damage the teeth.
